As part of our comprehensive Mid-Century Modern landscape renovation in San Diego’s Pacifica neighborhood, Sal & Bros tackled a crucial but often overlooked aspect of landscaping: drainage installation. This element was particularly important for this project due to the property’s unique location and topography.
The Importance of Proper Drainage in San Diego
Situated on the sloping Soledad Mountain in Pacific Beach, this mid-century home required a thoughtful approach to water management. Proper drainage is essential for:

- Complying with local regulations for stormwater management
Our Approach
Sal & Bros implemented a comprehensive drainage solution that addressed the property’s specific needs:
- Site Assessment: We carefully evaluated the property’s slope, soil composition, and existing water flow patterns.
- Strategic Planning: Our team designed a drainage system that would effectively channel water away from the home and landscaped areas, directing it towards the street as per city requirements.
- Trench Excavation: As seen in the images, we meticulously dug trenches across the property to accommodate the drainage pipes. This process required precision to ensure proper water flow.
- Pipe Installation: We used high-quality drainage pipes, strategically placed to create an efficient water management system.
- Proper Backfilling: After installing the pipes, we carefully backfilled the trenches, ensuring stability and proper grading.
- Integration with Landscape Design: The drainage system was seamlessly incorporated into the overall landscape design, including the installation of attractive catch basins and grates (as shown in images 3 and 4).
The Result
Our drainage installation not only protects the property from water-related issues but also enhances the overall functionality of the landscape. The system efficiently manages rainwater, directing it away from the home and the retaining walls, and into appropriate channels, all while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the mid-century modern design.
